In the ceiling you can see a square hatch. Apparently lifting heavy objects 95m is not easy when you do it via the staircase (I've been told the Dutch can't even move some furniture by staircase since the stairs are so steep and winding here). The hatches allowed you to hoist things from one level to the next.
