You should learn the "box" method of making a fire. It works very well.
Basically, instead of making a star shape, make a box shape. Alternate parallel settings of kindling to make a box shaped tower, put some easily ignitable things in the middle (such as paper, leafs, etc.) and go from there. It lets lots of air in while holding the heat there. It's simple to build it up and even if it collapses from large pieces, you can restructure it without too much effort since there are usually decent coals.
Also, using a firestarter of some kind works extremely well with the box method.
